Child abuse conviction

A Wisconsin man will spend the next six months behind bars after he allegedly broke the bones of his baby girl.

Richard A. Root, 21, has been accused of beating his two-month-old daughter back in March, breaking her bones and causing her brain to bleed, police said. The sentence was reached as part of a plea deal after Root pleaded "no contest" to the charges of Neglecting a Child Resulting in Great Bodily Harm.

Court documents state that Root shook his daughter and knelt on her legs while changing her diaper, WFMY reported. Doctors said the baby had more than 20 broken bones as well as injuries to her face, head, and bleeding in her brain.

Root will also be on probation for seven years, WXIA reported. The judge who sentenced Root also required that he refrain from drugs and alcohol, and gave him a choice to either find and keep a job or go to school full-time and get counseling.

According to police, Root told them he’d not been getting enough sleep. The baby was treated at a local hospital and released to a family member.
